Maintaining water quality within buildings (particularly regarding Legionella) requires control over the entire production and distribution chain of both cold and domestic hot water (DHW). This control often involves increasing production temperatures, which raises the cost of DHW. The share of DHW now often represents between 40% and 50% of the total energy consumption of public buildings.
There are many ways to reduce water and energy consumption in buildings — from water networks and treatment systems to hot water production and sanitary fittings. A review of the different consumption areas and possible reduction strategies will be presented.
